We Play GM: The Sonics

With the 2nd overall pick in the NBA draft the Seattle Supersonics select Kevin Durant (what an earth shattering revelation).Yesterday, we got in depth about where the Blazers should look to improve their roster in free agency, today we are getting right to the point.

Here is what we are going to assume about Durant: Durant is going to reach the level of scoring dominance similiar to that of Vince Carter, Carmelo Anthony, and Tracy McGrady. Look, all these guys are basically the same player, they are great scoring wing players. (Tracy McGrady is significantly more well rounded than the other two, but bear with us.)

Now answer this question in your head: If you could pick any player in the NBA to pair with Carmelo Anthony, which player(s) would you chose?

Answer: Steve Nash, Dirk, Tim Duncan … did we forget somebody? OOOH Wait, Chris Paul… all done.

Maybe: Deron Williams, Tony Parker, Lebron James, Jason Kidd…

Now Answer this question in your head: Where does Ray Allen fall in that list? (If you are bored at work, try to name 30 NBA players you would put on that list in front of Ray Allen, We are sure you can do it, screw that TPS report.)

Sorry Sonics fan, even after you draft the savior your team is still going to struggle to make the playoffs until you free up some salary cap room, get rid of Ray Allen, and rebuild completely around Durant. (Don’t worry about Ray Allen, though. His acting career after basketball is in great shape, have you seen “He Got Game” & “Harvard Man”?)

Harvard Man

Our prediction: Rashard Lewis opts out of his contract and leaves Seattle this off-season, Seattle plays an up tempo style of ball all year which leads to Kevin Durant throwing up some gaudy numbers on his way to rookie of the year, and–depending on Don Nelson and Kobe Bryant this offseason–the Sonics finish somewhere between 7th-9th in the West. Mark it down.
