We Play GM: We Hate the Hawks

Holy Shit, where do we even start? Can you imagine Chris Paul and Brandon Roy in the same back court? Can you imagine Marvin Williams still at North Carolina? All questions that must haunt the Atlanta front office.

Would you believe us if we told you that the PG position represents the 2nd highest paid player (at 6.8 million) and the 4th highest paid player (at 3.5 million) on the Hawks roster? And would you believe us that those players are Speedy Claxton & Tryonn Lue, respectively.

What. The. Fuck.

We’ll be looking at the Hawks from a GM’s perspective tonight. So with the biggest salary coming off the books in free agency this year being less than 750,000 dollars, we’ll be concentrating on the 3rd overall pick, the 11th overall pick, a trade, or some combination of the three.

The Hawks do have some young talented wing players: Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Josh Childress, Salim Stoudamire, and Marvin Williams. They need a PG and help up front.

We think the Hawks should take three basic steps:

1) Package the 3rd pick in the draft w/ Josh Childress & Speedy Claxton for Kurt Thomas and Marcus Banks (from the Suns). The Hawks don’t need more young talent, so screw the pick. The Hawks could force the Suns to take an overpaid waste of space from their roster (Claxton) and acquire Kurt Thomas, who would definitely solidify the frontline (besides, he simply does not fit in Phoenix’s scheme). Marcus Banks could play backup point anywhere in the league, just not in Phoenix, but this kid has talent and would be a valuable addition.

The Suns will want to shake things up a little bit after the playoff loss. They would love another young player who can run and gun which they could use the 3rd pick to get. They could also use some help at SF, this is the only position where they are actually a little light, so Childress would be a great fit.

2) Use the 11th overall pick on A.C. Law. He might be considered a stretch here, but who cares. The Hawks can give this guy the ball as a rookie and let him run the team. He can shoot and distribute, but, more importantly, he brings the attitude and toughness the Hawks desperately need.

3) Sign one of the three following players in the off season: Ronnie Turiaf, Eduardo Najera, or Anderson Varejo. The Hawks need a big man who can come off the bench and bring a ton of energy. Any of these guys will work. All three could start and give you a lot of defense and rebounding. This may require some sort of sign and trade, but we think Tryonn Lue would be just the guy to volunteer for that.

Of course, the Hawks won’t do any of these things. They’ll use the third and eleventh picks on two projects and will once again distort the draft into a mechanism to set their team back another three years. This is why we hate the Hawks.
