We Play GM: When Did the Grizzlies Move to Memphis?
June 4th, 2007 by NextRound

You’re not alone if you didn’t realize the Grizzlies moved to Memphis a couple of years ago. You’re also not alone if you did realize the Grizzlies moved to Memphis and you just didn’t give a shit.
When we sat down to write this post we anticipated evaluating a bunch of players that we’d be lucky to trade for a dog poop popcicle. But then we looked over the roster more closely and remembered Jerry West put this squad together.
Astonishingly, this team is not that bad. If they don’t add a single free agent or draft pick this offseason, they would start the following lineup next year:
PG: Damon Stoudamire (didn’t he win the rookie of the year?)
SG: Mike Miller (didn’t he win the rookie of the year?)
SF: Rudy Gay (wasn’t he first team all rookie this year?)
PF: Stromile Swift or Hakim Warrick (Swift was the former #2 overall pick, right?)
C: Pau Gasol (doesn’t he grow really badass facial hair?)
We know some of these guys have underachieved and what not, but obviously there is some decent talent to work with on this team.
As for our take with what the Grizzlies should do this offseason, it’s pretty simply: upgrade at the PG and PF position. The Grizzlies are extremely well off at the other positions (yes, that’s right, we used the word extremely), so they need to stick with where they’re lacking.
Who we would select with the 4th pick: Mike Conley Jr., Ohio St. PG.
Conley’s Upside: We like him for this team because he will be able to dribble penetrate against any defender in the league, even as a rookie. Conley’s penetration will generate a shitload more open threes for Mike Miller than what Stoudamire can produce at this point in his career.
Also, Gay and Warrick bring a lot of athleticism, filling the lanes on the fast break. With Conley leading the break, the Grizzlies may be able to improve by the end of the season to where they’re a poor man’s version of the New Jersey Nets’ Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson.
You might be thinking: the Nets aren’t that great suck balls, why would the Grizzlies want to be like them? Well, the Nets made it to the second round of the playoffs with that trio, and the Nets have nothing in the interior that’s in the same universe as our boy Gasol.
Conley’s Downside: We aren’t sold on his shooting or or his defense, but these are two areas any player can improve. Court vision and quickness are not.
Our Prediction: The Grizzlies will probably go with Al Horford (Florida PF) because Conley Jr. would be considered a stretch and Horford is the safe pick. We like Horford and think the pick makes sense, but we’ve always considered the safe decision the weak decision, hence our number of illegitimate children.
