Knee Jerk Reaction: “Superbad”
August 20th, 2007 by NextRound
“Superbad” was so awesome we may have to go see it again in the next 48 hours.
There. We needed to get that out of the way. You really don’t have to read further if you don’t want to because that first sentence pretty much sums it up.
Rarely in life does anything we build up expectations for longer than a week meet or exceed our them. This goes for both holiday parties and chicks in push up bras. But on the few occasions a movie like “Superbad” actually delivers, you know something extraordinary has happened.
We knew the pedigree was there. The Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen/”40 Year Old Virgin”/”Knocked Up” contingent (who really need some sort of abbreviated name) have been knocking on the door of greatness for a while now and it was only a matter of time before they hit on all cylinders.
“Superbad” transcends just about any comedy made in recent memory. There isn’t one contrived moment. We’ve contended for some time that the true test that separates good and great flicks is a movie’s ability to maintain it’s quality level even when forced to become plot oriented. Where “Wedding Crashers” failed, “Superbad” succeeds.
The movie manages to be clever, raunchy, identifiable, side splittingly funny, and true to life, all without trying too hard. This was our first theater experience since “There’s Something About Mary” where we feel we consistently missed many subtle nuances because of the collective laughter in the audience.
“Superbad” looks to be the quintessential ‘Defines Three Years of Your Life’ flick. People will make multiple trips to the theater and watch the DVD five times a week until one-liners are perfected. It will be the go to movie for when you get home from the bars at 3 A.M. with an assorted bag of McDonald’s.
If anything, we’re kind of bullshit that “Superbad” didn’t release while we were still in college.
As far as actors go, this is Jonah Hill’s (Seth) coming out party. You may remember him from some funny moments in “Knocked Up” as well as the fat kid who tries to by the aquarium shoes from the Ebay store in “40 Year Old Virgin”. You witness this guy live up to his potential in “Superbad”. And Michael Cera (Evan) takes his awkward kid routine (perfected on “Arrested Development”) to the next level in “Superbad”. He and Hill are a terrific one-two punch.
The only negatives we can think of are the cop scenes getting a little stale and we’re not sure how this group is going to follow up this movie with anything comparable.
Since we don’t want to ruin any of the tremendousness of the movie by quoting lines or revealing scenes, and since we pretty much can’t say more positive things about this flick without sounding like we need to get a room with ourselves, we’ll stop here.

Wow, I haven’t seen anyone that exicted about a movie since Willy-K got his hands on an early release copy of One Night in Paris.

The anticipation of going to see this movie was the only thing that kept my heart beating yesterday as I was the most hungover person on earth. And then I almost died from laughing so hard. “I have a boner.”
