Rankings: Top 5 Unsung Marky Mark Flicks
October 9th, 2007 by NextRound
With “We Own the Night” opening Friday and looking to be a potential winner, we thought we’d do a mini-retrospective on the film career of Mark Wahlberg. From our perspective, of course.
When we think Wahlberg, we think mediocrity. A so-so resume with some quality stuff mixed in, especially lately.
But the funny is that it’s actually the opposite. If anything, looking over the dude’s IMDB page, we’ve garnered a new found respect for the guy. He may actually be under-appreciated.
Sure, there have been a few shitastic blips on the radar (”Rock Star”, “The Big Hit”, and casting Kevin Connelly come to mind), but nothing he hasn’t bounced back from. And today, he’s arguably doing his best work (pending “We Own the Night” being bad ass, of course)
So we’re going to rank Wahlberg’s Top 5 Unsung Flicks. The movies that are really solid but you don’t think about too often. No “Departed”, no “Boogie Nights”. Just the films that don’t get a lot of play for whatever reason. Maybe because the dude started off his entertainment career as a white rapper.
5) “The Italian Job”. Entertaining heist flick. Ed Norton’s mustache is pretty awesome. Seth Green isn’t debilitatingly annoying. Charlize Theron looks 100% bonable even though she has six inches on Wahlberg. Nothing spectacular, but there are a lot worse ways to spend a few hours.
4) “Shooter”. One of the better action flicks this year. You may spend a lot of the movie debating whether Kate Mara is hot or not.
3) “Invincible”. Surprisingly entertaining and well made. Just about all these Disney sports movies are watchable, but this one is actually good.
2) “The Perfect Storm”. Great movie that you never hear mentioned anymore. Maybe because it’s as depressing as assisted living. Regardless, another notch in Wahlberg’s belt.
1) “Three Kings”. Simply tremendous flick. Smart, real, action packed.
We did hear that Marky Mark passed on Matt Damon’s role in the “Ocean’s 11″. He’s gotta want to kick his own ass for that one.
Maybe that’s why he and Clooney haven’t done any more films together. Who would pass on “Oceans”? After reviewing Wahlberg’s resume that’s probably the biggest gripe we have with him.
Well, that, and the Good Vibrations thing…

i think the movie where he’s brother’s w/ the white dude from friday night lights, tyrese, and andre3000 should be on there. i can’t believe i just wrote that sentence, but that movie had some crazy scenes in it. great violence.

We definitely considered that flick, but felt a little weird about it.

Good list…SMac, “Four Brothers” blew ass. I would almost put “Fear” on there for the very reason he got action on a roller coaster. The use of that move probably went uop 1,000,000% after that movie.

“Fear” was awesome. He defiled a very young reese witherspoon. also, raging on a chick’s dad is always cool. I stand by my “Four Brothers” call. there were come bad ass scenes in that movie.
