This Week In Stuff We Like
June 9th, 2008 by NextRound

In Golf:
- The US Open. It’s that time of year again. Time for the world’s golfing elite to look pedestrian on a course set up by sadists. But hey, if Tony Romo can shoot 84 while being distracted by Timberlake and Timberlake’s gay hat, there’s no reason the pros can’t throw up some low scores. Coverage begins 1PM Thursday on ESPN, switches over to NBC at 3PM, then back to ESPN at 5PM just in time to hear Chris Berman improv that, “Every Justin Rose has its thorn.” Also of note, the Woods/Mickelson/Scott grouping tees off early on Thursday and late on Friday. Word around Torrey Pines is Tiger and Phil have been texting each other relentlessly with excitement.
In Movies:
- Determining Whether the New Superhero Flick Will Suck or Not. ‘The Incredible Hulk’ opens Friday and it’s a bit of an enigma. We can usually determine with remarkable accuracy after viewing just one trailer whether a new superhero flick is going to be pretty awesome (see: ‘Iron Man’) or suck ginormous elephant balls (see: both ‘Fantastic Fours’), but the new ‘Hulk’ has us puzzled. So many questions. More on this later in the week.
- Anything with Rachel Bilson. OK, so ‘Jumper’ stars Maiden Christensen and the version Sam Jackson that looks like he’s wondering if the bank closes at 4 or 5PM, but when you factor in the state of summer television and the delectable Rachel Bilson you could do a whole lot worse than a poor man’s Keanu Reeves teleporting from international tourist attraction to international tourist attraction. (Editor’s note: we just reread that Keanu line again, still awesome.)
- Being Done with M. Night Shyamalan. ‘The Happening’ also opens Friday, and yes, you should go ahead and correlate you hearing almost nothing about it having to do with it probably sucking. We of course have zero sympathy for Shyamalan, who insists on reminding us he’s smarter than we are (we get it, Bruce Willis was dead, move on), but we do kind of hate it for Mark Wahlberg, who we have no beef with. Then again, when you spent a good portion of your life making music with the Funky Bunch you deserve failure from time to time.
In the NBA:
- One Day Breaks. Games 3 and 4 of the Finals air Tuesday and Thursday night on ABC. The series moves to L.A. so prepare to categorize celebrities by how they react to being on camera.
