That’s right, Back to the Future just blew your mind 25 years later. Anyone who says they’ve noticed this before is a liar.

Really? I thought everyone knew this.

I’ve seen BTTF at least a hundred times and had no idea. Clearly this isn’t a new development.

    Azrafael A. Razak says:

In the fiction, when Marty McFly comes back from 1955 to 1985, the mall happens to be the Lone Pine Mall. This is due to the fact that when Marty arrives in 1955, he is actually at the Twin Pines Ranch, which belongs to the Old Man Peabody. Trying to avoid being gunshot by Peabody, Marty races off the property and accidentally hits one of the two Peabody’s prized pines, leading the place to be called Lone Pine, since there had been only one pine tree left.

    leonardo.ruppenthal says:

You’ve got to be kidding me. This difference was pretty obvious to anyone who was half paying attention the first time they saw the film.

Aside from the subtle but still obvious visual reference in your screen grabs, a few points of dialogue call additional attention to the bit:

Doc Brown in the mall parking lot: Things have certainly changed around here. I remember when this was all farmland, as far as the eye could see! Old man Peabody owned ALL of this! He had this crazy idea… about breeding pine trees.

Old Man Peabody: My pine, why you… You space bastard! You killed my pine!

    nvidia says:

Uh, yeah I thought everyone noticed this the first time around, they didn’t exactly make it an easter egg.

Same thing with changing the name of the gorge outside of town to “Eastwood Ravine” in BTTF3…

    jaiotu says:

Noticed the first time I saw Back to the Future in the 80’s. Very obvious.

    Token Smoker says:

Can we start a fan club for all of the people that noticed this back in the 80s the firs time they watched Back to the Future? These people all seem very cool and I’d like to meet them and maybe give them some money for their achievement. You guys are great keep it up.

    James Evans replied:

We don’t need a fan club. We’re just amazed that the rest of you think this is actually some great new discovery. It was incredibly obvious.

    Token Smoker replied:

    twitter is better than facebook

    Tim Pierce replied:

Thanks for handling that so well i would have used some negative remarks. Ha! Bttf rules and should have its own course of study in colleges.

    Verbal Kint replied:

we already have a fan club. You just now found out about it.

    therealchristower says:

Author calls everyone who noticed this before a liar… does he really think that in the 25 years BTTF has been out, nobody else noticed? Author is an arrogant chump with bad perception and the assumption that everyone else is just as oblivious as he is.

    bryan.kamyszek says:

Yeah. I’ve known this since I was a kid.

I’m no casual BTTF fan. I watched this movie 3-5 times per week as a child. It was that traditional kids “favorite video” for me.

    Daniel Christopher Keith says:

Watched this like a billion times as a kid. It was the first “Easter egg” I ever discovered, and it’s not even the coolest one out there.

    Scott Lindsay says:

    Um… Yeah… this was super obvious…

Just because you actually payed attention when you watched the movie 25 years later doesn’t make it a mind f*ck…

I was about 7 when I watched BTTF and I noticed this and laughed about how cool it was…

    Scott Lindsay replied:

Fun fact… If “Anyone who says they’ve noticed this before is a liar.” maybe you would like to check out:

Duh, How many times have you watched BTTF? Like once or something? Everyone who actually like the moive already knew this. Crazy that anyone would NOT noitce this. HAhahahaha.

    wow..that amazing

    Bob Cook says:

OK this is my favorite movie, and has always been my go-to trivia question for people. So no, anyone who says they already knew this is not a liar.

    Luke Fulcomer says:

Uh…. considering Zemekis wrote this into the book (which was published long before it was turned into a script) I’m not sure how you could MISS it. He spent quite a bit of time, I’m sure, making the whole script linear.

    rotomangler says:

You’re kidding right? You didn’t notice the HUGE FREAKING LIT SIGN RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA? This was meant to be completely obvious to the viewer.

    Mindf*ck? hardly.

You might be out of your league with this movie. I think Dora the Explorer is on right now. There are lots of funny, brightly colored pictures to notice in that show too!

    blainekyle says:

Dude, I don’t usually comment on these things, but you just called me a liar. I’ve seen the BTTF series probably hundreds of times (seriously, I’m that big of a fan), and have picked up on a ton of really nifty references, like the clock in the opening sequence of the first film that has a small ELB doll hanging from its minute hand, but this one, it’s obvious.

Also, Leo Ruppenthal (above commentor) makes a good point about the dialog. As if the visual cues weren’t enough, the dialog alludes to it multiple times.

So, if you think this is a mindf*ck, let me give you some more to ponder. When Marty is in Downtown Hill Valley in 1985, a political truck rides by prompting people to re-elect Mayor Goldie Wilson. In 1955, in the soda shop, he tells Goldie, who is working there as a busboy, that he’s going to be mayor. LATER, in the future, there is a video billboard advertising hover conversions at the automotive business of one Goldie Wilson III, who, in an interview snippet on said billboard, talks about “when my grand-dad was mayor of Hill Valley…” That’s just one example.

The old lady in the first film tells Marty and Jennifer that the clock tower was built in 1855, and then, in BTTF III, Marty and ELB are actually present for the unveiling of the new clock tower in that same year.

Hill Valley is an oxymoron (a hill and a valley are opposite things).

The number 1.21 is a recurring theme in the film. Einstein traveled exactly 1 min. 21 sec. into the future at the start of the first film (despite ELB saying that it was precisely one minute). Einstein reappeared at 1:21 AM. And, of course, the power needed to facilitate time travel is exactly 1.21 gigawatts. Side note on this one: ELB repeatedly pronounces “gigawatt” as “jiggowatt.” This is in fact not a mistake by the actor, as the script actually had the word spelled “jiggowatt.” It is not known whether this was intentional, or an error on the part of Bob Zemeckis, but it is known that it does mean gigawatt.

ELB’s first two names are derived from the words “Time Portal” spelled backwords (Emit Latrop = Emmett Lathrop).

When the DeLorean won’t start as Marty is preparing to go on his lightning-fueled trip home, the pattern of the headlights spell out “SOS” in morse code.

Marty’s tardiness for school at the beginning of the first film (which he blames on ELB’s array of clocks being slow) is foreshadowed by one clock which has fallen to the floor and shows the correct time of 8:20 AM.

A keen eye will find the familiar faces of then-unknowns Billy Zane and Elijah Wood in the BTTF series.

Pepsi is heavily advertised throughout the film series, but the only reference to a Coca-Cola product is an iconic one: “You gonna order something, kid?,” “Uh, yeah. Give me…gimme a Tab.”

This is a sad one: The clock tower we all know and love was damaged three years ago–not by lightning, but by a fire on the Universal back lot where it resided. The same fire destroyed a set from Spider-Man 3 (which is actually a Sony film).

I could absolutely keep going, but I have better things to do now. But, in the future, when you “discover” something “profound” in the BTTF series, don’t DARE preemptively call me a liar for telling you that I already knew about it.

    psulli replied:

Look what you did. You made awesome!

    blainekyle replied:

    Thanks, psulli! I do try.

P.S. Feel free to lash out against S. Irony (below) if you agree with my position.

    psulli replied:

My best advice is to not respond to that stuff and enjoy your personal idiosyncrasies. Because regardless to whatever you have heard, the internet is not serious business.

    S. Irony says:

wow, I saw the movie a shit ton and can’t remember if I saw that or not. What I do know is Blaine Kyle might need to find some vagina to help him pass the time. or some pot. or something other then lego’s and star trek books (yea I saw your site) and for Christ’s sake shut the hell up about your ability to watch the same movie a hundred times and take note of the “nifty” eggs.

None the less, that is pretty cool. Glad I saw it and now I am moving on with my life. (see how that works Blaine)

    blainekyle replied:

    Hah hah, ha-whoop-OH!

Excuse me, I just fell out of my seat while laughing. Hmm? Oh, you want to know why I was laughing so hard? Well, because you’re a dumbass. See, if you just scroll up a bit, you’ll see my Google profile picture, next to my comment earlier. That picture is of me and my wife. So, yes, your argument is invalid.

As for pot, I think that perhaps you might need some yourself. My regular dosage keeps me from being needlessly aggressive to my internet peers. Then again, if you truly “saw the movie a shit ton,” yet never noticed the Lone Pine bit, perhaps you’ve already indulged too much. Seriously, dude, if you did read my website, you’d have found multiple pot references.

As for your remark about Legos and Star Trek books, I’m honestly not sure what you’re talking about. I had some Legos when I was a kid, but I actually always preferred my K’Nex (remember those; they were awesome!) I am a fan of Star Trek, but I’ve never read any of the books. I started one once, but never finished it. I usually prefer books that aren’t based on television series. I have a friend who reads Star Wars books like it was going out of style (which it probably is), but that’s neither here nor there.

Now, I don’t understand why you are assaulting me for knowing and sharing a lot about a popular science-fiction film, but I will note that if your point is that my comment being raised as an argument against the author is in some way something to be ashamed of, then what does that say about your disparaging comment against me? I mean, I don’t go about criticizing you for knowing every detail of that pornographic film that you keep hidden from your mom.

So, in conclusion, I would counter that my comment above has actually added to the value of this page, given that it provides expanded information in the same vein as the author’s post, whereas your comment does little more than prove that the internet will always have two things in abundance: porn, and TROLLS.

    S. Irony replied:

Wow Blaine, did I hit a nerve? Here is a post form your really awesome site “Irene gave me several Star Trek books. They’re pretty cool. Four of them, which came in a boxed set, are probably the most interesting, and I’ll probably hit those first.” http://blainekyle.net/?p=1381 ….. I guess there are two Star Treks?
Now I have an admittedly bad taste in movies and I did enjoy the new star trek. I am not sure if I remember the lone pines our not (which if your below 70 IQ would have read my post you would have noticed). Good stuff on your hobby, I appreciate your dedication to knowing all things about 1 movie. I tip my hat to you sir.
And as for being married, I am too, so I can say that from mine and all married men experiences that you are most certainly going long stretches without the vagina services.
I would like to express my apologies to you in regards to the idea that I was “assaulting you”. I feel I merely pointed out fact based references. I never called you a Tool, Dork, Dumb ass, or any other things that would have been relevant in an assault on you. I was offering so pointers.
So in conclusion: Keep up the good work on finding Easter eggs, I hear that the skill is somewhere between Physics and operating a Nuclear Reactor.

    S. Irony replied:

PS, your B day post was from August 25th, 2009. Now I have to run hit a bowl pack, put on my Phish Shirt, eat a grill cheese and dread lock my hair.

    blainekyle replied:

Wow, S. Irony, did I hit a nerve? I only meant to defend myself, justly and effectively, against another who chose to criticize me. However, it is clear that logic won’t work with you (maybe you should watch some more Star Trek).

Sorry about your sexless marriage, but trust me, yours is NOT the experience of all married men. Now I hope you can move past that crude subject.

Another interesting thing to point out is that my “below 70 IQ” seems to be much more capable at manipulating this language than that of the person who has assigned me the very low score (I could tell you my actual IQ, but it might make you cry, and I actually don’t want to do that).

In regards to Physics: I’m actually a big fan. I listen to and read everything by Dr. Michio Kaku that I can get my hands on. I could analyze Back to the Future from a theoretical physics’ perspective for you, but I feel pretty sure that you would only respond with more crude, malicious remarks, so I’ll refrain.

Now, with those final points made, I’m officially exiting this dialog. I’m sorry that I let myself get dragged into it, and I won’t be dragged down to a lower level. I don’t mean to discourage you from replying, but I’m telling you simply that it will be your claim upon the last word (so you might want to run it through Grammar-Check). However latently, I’ll be taking the advice of psulli (above poster).

Oh, and thanks for all the attention you’ve given to my website. I appreciate every pageload!

    S. Irony replied:

    Gramma chacker? wha is dat?

If this amazes u then u need to find the interview anthony (opie an anthony show:sirius 197/xm202) did wth the creator of bttf. He really shed light on alot of things about the making. What did or didnt make it in, why they did certain things certain ways etc… really one of the best interviews ever.

    boyd.skywalker says:

I swear I totally saw that one of the first times I watched this movie, back in elementary school. And yeah, my mind was blown back then too.

    engeriser says:

I knew this not because I noticed it but because someone pointed it out to me like ten years ago. But calling everyone who noticed it liars sure got you a lot of page hits! Brilliant!

    heidiwalter says:

Totally missed this the first time. Now I have to go watch it. It helps that nothing else is on.

    jicarney says:

I noticed it first time around, and assumed most people did.

    Mark Mellen says:

lol @ anyone who said they noticed this before is a liar. More like anyone who didn’t notice this before is a dumbass. It’s pretty blatant in the movie the Marty runs over one of the guys “twin pines” making it a “lone pine” thus changing the name of the mall. I noticed this when I was 8.

    God says:

(scoff) A lot of people were not paying attention to detail. There are many things that are different. Watch it again…and again! The movies are packed with differences, subtle plays and jokes, and somethings they give you to say, ‘Hey! When did this happen? Why didn’t I see it?’ Movie magic! I saw it on tape and I wore those tapes out going frame to frame, sometimes. My kids killed me because they were so sick of it. Now on disc, and blu-ray, I check out things I was not seeing even then.

    gary.ewing.80 says:

DOCS NAME IS EMIT. “TIME”. Everyone knows about Lone pine. there are many other cool connections made in the movie. some site has pointed them al;l out.
i am sure most of you know that bttf was paRTLY FILMED WITH another actor before being scrapped and remade?

    mikeosh1 says:

Thats not a mistake, the first sign shows marty arriving at the mall at 1:16am before the libyans were there. when he came back he arrived when the libyans were there. So its just showing the amount of time that went by before the libyans arrived, which is 17 minutes.
