Booth Picks College Football Winners: Week 5

September 26th, 2008 by Booth

Booth picks winners! 95% all time ATS! Weekly CFB picks on NextRound.net!

Want to live in a fancy house?! Want to pour champagne on girls in bikinis and not get slapped?! Just play Booth’s picks and your dreams will become a reality! Keep a roll of toilet paper nearby! You just might shit yourself!

So who else liked Oregon State and the under last night?

Last weekend was our first weekend in the red — albiet just barely (-0.2 units) — so it’s time to come strong. And nothing says strong like my first 2 unit pick of the season…

Connecticut at Louisville (-3.5) - 2 UNITS (ESPN2, 8PM Friday)

Coaching:  Louisville -3

Louisville gets the three point edge because of new Defensive Coordinator Ron English. He has changed the scheme, attitude, and productivity of the Cardinals defense.

Home Field Advantage: Louisville -3

Louisville gets the standard three point edge for home field advantage. This is a fairly long trip for UConn and Louisville fans create a great college football atmosphere, despite their stadium being named after deliver pizza.

Quarterback: Louisville -7

UConn QBTyler Lorenzen is nothing more than a caretaker. He doesn’t have a strong arm and he doesn’t have the ability to stretch the field.

Louisville’s QB was absolutely pathetic against Kentucky in the season opener. I mean horrible. However, his performance did not reflect his talent level. In the two games since the season opener he has completed 66% of his passes with 4 TDs and 0 Ints.

Talent:  Louisville -3

UConn boasts the leading rusher in the nation, Donald Brown. The problem is the Huskies have no compliment for Brown. They’ve even recently resorted to giving DBs a shot at receiver in an attempt to create some much needed offensive fire power.  UConn’s defense looked solid on paper prior to the Baylor game, but in that contest they were exposed. If Baylor’s QB could have hit more wide open recievers UConn would have lost that game by double digits.

Louisville’s defense has looked extremely good this season. They’re only giving up 42 yards a game on the ground and 200 yards a game through the air. This is where the hidden value in this line rests.

Schedule: Louisville -0.5

This is the first of three huge road games for UConn (Louisville, North Carolina, Rutgers) while Louisville is playing their 4th straight home game.

Momentum: Louisville -1

After getting a hard fought win against Baylor last Friday night this looks to be a classic letdown spot for UConn. Louisville has bounced back nicely from their season opening disappointment against Kentucky and the team has been playing extremely well in their last two games.

ADVANTAGE: Louisville -17.5. Take Louisville -3.5.

Booth Picks College Football Winners: Week 4

September 19th, 2008 by Booth

Booth picks winners! 95% all time ATS! Weekly CFB picks on NextRound.net!

Want to wear fancy necklaces?! Want a stripper to give you her real number?! Just play Booth’s picks and your dreams will become a reality! Keep a roll of toilet paper nearby! You just might shit yourself!

First Chink in the armor last weekend with the New Mexico State pick. I’m sure most of you were expecting me to at worst push, not actually lose a game. My apologies. We’re still a healthy 7-1 (+5.9 units) with plans to capitalize even further this weekend on four higher profile games.

Wake Forest (+5) at Florida State - 1 UNIT (ESPN 2, 7PM)

Coaching:  Wake Forest -5.5

I like Bobby Bowden as a coach probably more than I should but he doesn’t really do anything anymore except wear cool hats and use funny words in interviews.

Jim Grobe might just be the best coach in the country. I think you could argue -5.5 isn’t giving Wake Forest enough credit in this spot, but I’m trying to remain conservative with my numbers.

Home Field Advantage: FSU -3

Doak Campbell is not an easy place to win. Normally I would give Florida State more than the standard three points, but two years ago when these two teams played in Tallahassee Wake Forest won 30-0.

Quarterback: Wake Forest -6

Christian Ponder is a better option than Drew Weatherford but he has to prove it against a legitimate defense before his numbers become relevant.

Riley Skinner has looked superb so far this season (and I’m not talking dong photos) against legitimate competition going 59 of 79 for 487 yards with 5 TDs and 0 INTs.

Talent: Wake Forest -3

When Bobby Bowden was asked why his team has fallen off since the late 90s his answer was that he doesn’t have the same caliber athletes. Answers like that are why I like Bowden. I think he is right.

I feel the hidden value in this line rests with how much Ponder will struggle against the solid/opportunistic Deacons defense.

Schedule: Wake Forest -1

Wake Forest has already played a road game. Wake Forest has already played a team with legitimate D-I talent.

Florida State is taking a huge step up in competition in this spot.

Momentum:  FSU -3

The Seminoles have gotten some confidence and rhythm in their two scrimmage-like games to start the season. Also, that 30-0 drumming will not be forgotten by the upperclassmen still on the team. I expect Florida State will be ready for this one.

ADVANTAGE: Wake Forest -9.5. Take the Deacons +5.

Not a bad night last night. Time to get back to work…

Ball State (-7) at Akron - 1 UNIT

Coaching:  Ball State -3

Ball State Head Coach Brady Hoke has done a nice job of recruiting and building a program from the ground up. The Cardinals finally broke through in Hoke’s 4th year and became bowl eligible.

On the opposite end of the spectrum Akron has steadily declined under Head Coach J.D. Brookhart. Just another reason not to trust someone with initials for a first name.

Home Field Advantage: Akron -1

I don’t consider any place in the MAC particularly tough to play but I give Akron the slight nod for not having to take a bus ride.

Quarterback: Ball State -8

If you don’t know anything about Ball State Quarterback Nate Davis let Booth be the first to introduce you to one of the most talented QBs in the land. After a monster season last year he has started this season 42 of 52 for 616 yards and 7 TDs in two games.

Akron Quarterback Chris Jacquemain has also started the year fast going 42 of 62 for 487 yards and 5 TDs in two games.

The difference is that Nate Davis is an NFL caliber player averaging around 70 yards a game more than Jacquemain and completing better than 80% of his passes.

Talent: Ball State -10

While Nate Davis is an NFL caliber quarterback, the real star of the Cardinals team is Dante Love. Love had almost 1,400 yards receiving last year. This year he’s started even hotter with 18 catches for 336 yards and 3 TDs. Not to mention he has carried the ball 9 times for 59 yards and 2 TDs.

Don’t worry though, Ball State has a running game outside of Love. Junior tailback MiQuale Lewis has carried the ball 32 times for 209 yards already this year.

The Ball State defense isn’t great but they have been frisky in their first two games only giving up an average of 18.5 ppg. They will give up some points in this game to Akron’s offense that has some talent at both running back and wide receiver.

The hidden value in this line is matching up the high powered Ball State offense with the  totally inept defense of the Akron Zips. They averaged giving up 29.2 ppg last year and have started the season by giving up 33 ppg.

How good does it feel to have Kansas/South Florida playing Friday night so you can pregame with Mangino before going out? At the same how bad does it feel that you didn’t bet USC -3.5 three weeks ago now that the line is up to 10.5?

Alright, to the business at hand. A solid 5-0 so far. Time to hop back on the Boothy train to Cashtown. Here’s tonight’s pick. I’ll be back tomorrow with picks for the weekend.

North Carolina at Rutgers OVER 46 - 1 UNIT (ESPN, 7:30PM)

Note: Hop on this quick it’s going to start moving.

North Carolina:

Offense: UNC returns 10 starters on offense from a unit that really struggled to run the ball last year. In their first game against McNeese State they couldn’t run, but moved the ball pretty well through the air.

Defense: The Tarheel defense is terrible. Plain and simple. They only return 5 starters, four of which are in the secondary. UNC’s defense gave up 27 points on almost 400 yards of offense to Div I-AA McNeese State. McNeese Fucking State!

Rutgers:

Offense: Rutgers offense returns a pair of 1,000 yard receivers (Britt & Underwood) from last year’s squad that averaged 32.8 ppg. Ray Rice bolted to the league, but Kordell Young gained almost 100 yards against Fresno State in their opener. Rutgers 7 point output in that game was a reflection of their failure to capitalize on opportunities more than it was offensive ineptitude. Rutgers offense should move the ball at will against UNC.

Defense: Rutgers defense has the potential to be better than they were in Week 1. They gave up 422 yards to Fresno State, including 163 yards on the ground to tailback Ryan Matthews.

Booth Picks Winners: Week 2

September 5th, 2008 by Booth

Booth picks winners! 95% all time ATS! Weekly CFB picks on NextRound.net! Want to eat at fancy restaurants?! Want to upgrade lady friends?! Just play Booth’s picks and your dreams will become a reality! Keep a roll of toilet paper nearby! You just might shit yourself!

We got off to a good start last week (3-0, +3.0 units), which is destined to haunt me seeing that my life is based on a foundation of under-delivering, not over-delivering.

Only two picks again this Saturday. The number of teams playing D-II cupcakes really limits Week 2’s overall board and there’s still a lot of uncertainty out there. Also, meant to make a note last week that if I like the Thursday night college game I’ll do a Part I post midday Thursday. If not, just the one post on Friday. Hope that make sense.

Time to bet on Temple. Get excited.

Temple (+7) at Connecticut - 1 UNIT

1) Coaching: EVEN

Do you know who coaches UConn? Answer: Randy Edsall.

Do you know who coaches Temple? Answer: Al Golden.

2) Home Field Advantage: Temple -1

After starting off the season with a rare victory, the Owls get a slight edge for not having to travel.

3) Quarterback Play: Temple -0.5

As much as I’d like him to be, UConn QB Tyler Lorenzen is not related to Jarred Lorenzen. Overall, he’s nothing more than a caretaker on offense. He isn’t a difference maker.

On the other hand, Temple’s Adam DiMichele makes plays with both his legs and his feet. He might not be a superstar and his last name may be sound kind of French and gay but I’ll take DiMichele over Lorenzen under center.

4) Schedule: EVEN

UConn plays Virginia next week, but that isn’t a big enough game to take into account UConn looking ahead.

5) Talent: EVEN

When these two teams played last year Connecticut won 22-17 at home. Temple should have won the game. UConn returns 8 starters on both offense and defense. Temple returns 8 starters on offense (including 4 on the offensive line) and 9 on defense. It is very rare that two teams essentially return their whole teams, but this is a rematch of last year’s game.

6) Momentum: Temple -3

Temple actually won their first game of the season for the first time maybe ever! The Owls truly believe they have a chance to be competitive in the MAC this year and they might actually be right with so many returning starters.

ADVANTAGE: Temple -4.5. Take Temple plus the 7 points.

Booth Picks Winners: Week 1, Part 2

August 29th, 2008 by Booth

Booth picks winners! 95% all time ATS! Weekly college football picks on NextRound.net!

Want to go on fancy vacations?! Want to bang chicks who think they’re better than you?! Just play Booth’s picks and your dreams will become a reality! Keep a roll of toilet paper nearby! You just might shit yourself!

Here’s the Week 1 main course.

SPECIAL NOTE: Before we get into college football picks, I will be taking on a feat never before tried by any human being, including David Blaine. THE NUGGET CHALLENGE. Tonight I will attempt to eat at least 60 McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets.

Maske, JB, and Toast have agreed to pay $1 per person per nugget up to 60 and $2 per person per nugget for each nugget I get down beyond 60. But here is the kicker, if I don’t get to 60 I get nothing. The carnage should be legendary. We’ll update you next week.

Alright, back to the task at hand. Last night was a solid start to the season. Baylor’s quarterbacks turned the ball over; Riley Skinner got his team in the end zone and didn’t settle for field goals. If you take pictures of yourself with your dong out you better be able to play.

I like two more for the weekend. Here we go…

LA Monroe at Auburn (-26) - 1 UNIT

1) Coaching: Auburn -7

Tommy Tuberville has the nickname Riverboat Gambler for a reason. This year he brings in new offensive coordinator, Tony Franklin from Troy, to employ the spread offense in the SEC. The fact that Auburn is putting in a new offense means that Auburn will probably keep their foot on the gas this entire game in order to get in as much tune up work as possible.

2) Home Field Advantage: Auburn -7

War Eagle really doesn’t make any sense to me, but the Auburn home crowd should be ready liquored up and ready to go for the season opener.

3) Quarterback Play: Auburn -7

Auburn sophomore Kodi Burns was built to run the spread offense. He is a threat with both his legs and his arm. He should have no problem moving the ball down the field against LA-Monroe’s defense.

4) Schedule: Auburn -1

This is essentially a scrimmage for the Auburn team. They have their eyes set on winning the SEC West, but don’t think they don’t realize that in order to navigate a tough SEC schedule they need to get their work in this weekend.

Booth Picks Winners: Week 1, Part 1

August 28th, 2008 by Booth

Booth picks winners! 95% all time ATS!  Weekly college football picks on NextRound.net!

Want to go on fancy vacations?! Want to bang chicks who think they’re better than you?! Just play Booth’s picks and your dreams will become a reality! Keep a roll of toilet paper nearby! You just might shit yourself!

Here’s the Week 1 appetizer. I only like one game for tonight. And of course I’m backing the team quarterbacked by a guy who likes to take pictures of his own dong. This may become a recurring theme for my picks.

Expect the full holiday weekend slate midday tomorrow.

Wake Forest (-12) at Baylor - 1 UNIT

Thursday, 8PM FSN

1) Coaching: Wake Forest -3

Art Briles comes over from Houston to join Baylor this year. Briles is probably one of the more underrated coaches in the country but he might as well be John L. Smith compared to Jim Grobe. Grobe is arguably the best coach in college football. He’s worth a field goal almost every game.

2) Home Field Advantage: Baylor -1

Baylor gets a one point edge because of the long flight for Wake Forest, not because Floyd Casey Stadium is Texas’ version of the Swamp. The crowd should not be a factor.

3) Quarterback Play: Wake Forest -14

Wake Forest 3rd year starting quarterback — and appreciater of own dong — Riley Skinner had over a 70% completion percentage last year. He should easily move the ball down the field against a Baylor defense that only returns 6 starters from a squad that averaged giving up 37.0 ppg last year.

However, the hidden value in this line rests in the Bears’ atrocious QB play. Briles is attempting to install his gimmicky offense that includes plays where the center snaps the ball at angle to the QB who is already in motion like a wide receiver. This offense works when executed to perfection, but Baylor’s last scrimmage was turnover central. If you know anything about the Deamon Deacons, you know they have one of the most opportunistic defenses in the country.

4) Schedule: Baylor -1

I’m a little worried Wake Forest might be looking ahead to their Week 2 home match up against Ole Miss. But most teams come out ready to play in Week 1 and I trust Grobe will have his players’ heads on straight.
